Combe House is an Elizabethan Grade I listed manor set in 10 acres of gardens & arboretum and surrounded by 3,500 acres of country estate. Whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, its historical significance means that there are a number of period features which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. There are 15 bedrooms all situated on the first floor and access is by three flights of stairs (as it is over 400 years old there are no lifts). However, the Restaurant and public rooms are all on the ground floor and easily accessible. We are pleased to offer the following services and facilities:

We are located at the end of a mile of winding drive; 2 miles from the main A30/A303 and 11 miles from the M5 exits 28 or 29.
Honiton Train Station is 4 miles or 10 minutes’ drive and is on the main Exeter to London Waterloo line.
Taxis are usually available at the station (fare £8.00 approximately) or we can book one for you.
The cob and thatch village of Gittisham is at the end of our drive, 1 mile away and makes for a lovely walk.
Honiton is 2 miles away and Exeter is 14 miles away.
Exeter International Airport is 10 miles and only 10 minutes’ drive off the A30 from Combe.
Arrival & Car Parking
Check-in is normally after 2pm and check out around 10.30am. Earlier check-in to your room may well be possible by arrangement.
On arrival, please feel free to stop outside the front door to unload your passengers and luggage. Parking is then to the left of the house on the level drive under the cypress cedar trees. The drive is gravelled.
We are only too happy to offer help with your luggage and to provide an umbrella if it’s raining.
Outside the front door there is a boot scraper, a sand pot for smokers and water for dogs.
Main Entrance & Reception
There are two small steps measuring 4 inches and 2 inches at the front door, with prior warning the wooden ramp will be in place to aid wheelchair users. There are no other steps on the ground floor.
Upon entering the porch there is a front door which is often closed. Turn the handle clockwise.
This opens onto the Great Hall, a large panelled room with a huge log fire. The floor is polished parquet with random rugs.
Turn left just inside for the reception desk and if nobody is immediately to hand, ring the bell on the desk on the right hand side.
Public Areas Internal
The Sitting Room runs through from the Reception area – the left hand doorway. The right hand door is the entrance to the Panel Room, an elegant Private Dining Room and Meeting Room.
The small snug bar follows through from the Sitting Room.
There is seating throughout and in the Great Hall, a mixture of chairs and big (fairly low) squashy sofas.
The Office is situated opposite the Bar
Public Areas – WCs
The Gents’ Toilets are off the side hall to the left of the Reception desk. The second door on the right.
The disabled toilet is also here which doubles as a ladies’ toilet.
The floor of the hall is carpeted and then follows though to very well worn and highly polished slates. The toilets have a granite non-slip tiled floor.
In the disabled toilet there are rails either side of the toilet and basin and on the door.
The second ladies’ toilet is opposite the Restaurant. There is one step inside and a second door.
The Restaurant & Green Muralled Dining Room
They are located next to one another on the other side of the Hall. The Dining Room floors are carpeted.
We are licensed for the sale of alcohol.
Menus, staff will automatically take you through the menu and take as much time as you require. Menus can be available in large bold print by prior arrangement.
Lighting is mainly natural daylight with candles on the tables in the evening.
We are happy to cater for any dietary needs, please advise on booking.
Meeting & Private Dining Rooms
The Green Mural Dining Room can also be used for a private party or a Meeting.
The Panel Room similar, with natural daylight and extra standard lighting and candles in the evening.
The Georgian Kitchen at the back of the House past the Gents and Disabled toilets is a very unique venue for private dining. It has a well worn slate floor, natural lighting and lamps and candles in the evening.
There is also a restored Victorian cooking range which is lit for every occasion.
Bedrooms
There are 15 bedrooms all on the first floor. All are of varying sizes with kingsize double or twin beds. All are ensuite with shower or bath shower. All are carpeted with most bathrooms with tiled floors.
There is a choice of duvet or blankets on booking.
There is room service for morning tea and coffee, meals and refreshments.
Access is by three flights of stairs :
The stairs opposite the sitting room have 24 steps
The back service stairs through the door past the Gents’ toilets have 11 steps then a small landing and 4 further steps to the Linen Wing
The main stairs opposite the Green Mural Dining Room have 26 steps.

Gardens & Grounds
There are 10 acres of gardens and arboretum around the House which guests are welcome to explore and enjoy at any time.
Additional Information
In the case of a fire, an alarm sounds continuously. A member of staff will come to your room and assist with evacuation outside. Please advise if you have a hearing impediment at the time of booking or at check-in. There are fire extinguishers throughout the House and Fire Exits are well signed and lit.
All staff have regular training which includes fire; emergencies; 1st Aid and disability awareness.
There is good mobile phone coverage outside the house. Orange reception is weak inside. No mobile phones are permitted in public areas.
We are happy to refrigerate any medication or perishables ie baby’s milk etc.
Smoking is only permitted outside.
We have a list of equipment hire companies on request including taxi companies who can provide wheelchair transportation.
